This week, as we continue along our virtual travels through Europe, our regional dinner was perfect for those of us who have a sweet tooth - a Belgian Waffle Bar! I surprised my family by ordering a Belgian Waffle iron online since we don't have anything like that in our furnished rental apartment here in Berlin. My family and I had so much fun picking out the toppings we wanted for each piping hot waffle as each was ready for us.
Belgians don't tend to eat waffles for breakfast or brunch the way we do in the U.S. - in Belgium it is more of a street food/afternoon snack, if I understand correctly. So, we took the liberty of making them for dinner/dessert, or 'Dinsert' - that's a thing, right? ;)
The recipe I used and am sharing here is probably a bit closer to what we are used to in the U.S. than the recipes in Belgium, but that's a complicated statement, because it seems there are a wide variety of recipes in Belgium, and they tend to vary regionally within the country as well, so here's another (delicious) one to add to the mix!
Look at the small number of ingredients we used this week (the toppings for the DIY bar is a different story, and I will list those below - haha!).
My fellow Germany residents will drool over the Baking Powder in the above photo, as this is a very difficult ingredient to get here, as the Baking Powder sold here in Germany is a different formula and doesn't react in recipes the way we are expecting it to, so it takes a lot of learning and figuring. One of the best decisions we made when moving here was to pack some Baking Powder from home. That's a good tip for anyone planning an international move.
This was a really quick and easy recipe to make and we foresee morning waffles in our future!
