TRAVEL & ACCOMODATIONS
The attractions that we want to visit this week are split between the capital city of Copenhagen, which is located on an island close to the Sweden border, and the larger, mainland Denmark. For this reason, we will first plan to stay in Copenhagen and then in the city of Aarhus on the mainland.
In Copenhagen, surrounded by water, we will stay in the very unique, CPH Living Floating Hotel.
In Aarhus, we will stay in more grounded accommodations, the luxurious Hotel Royal Aarhus.
From Berlin, Germany, travel is extremely easy. Many airlines can get us there nonstop, for less than 100 Euros in about an hour. If we want a more leisurely experience, a train ride will take 9 hours and will cost less than 50 Euros.
ITINERARY
COPENHAGEN
As we arrive in Denmark, we will notice that the country is comprised of so many islands - 444 to be exact, though only 76 of them are inhabited - we will want to check them out. Here's just one example of many.
With Denmark maintaining the longest uninterrupted monarchy in Europe, we won't want to miss a visit to the Royal Palace.
Denmark is proud of their native son, author Hans Christian Andersen. In Copenhagen, we will visit the Little Mermaid statue.
There is also a museum that "brings his fairytales to life":
Not too far from Copenhagen, we will also visit the home of Hans Christian Andersen.
Back in downtown Copenhagen, we will take a stroll down Strøget Street - the world's longest pedestrian only street - for some souvenir shopping.
Next, we can get a comprehensive overview of the history and culture of Denmark by visiting the National Museum of Denmark. We can click here to take a virtual tour in any of the exhibit areas.
Next we will visit Copenhill, the world's cleanest waste-to-energy facility, which is remarkably also home to a man-made mountain with its own ski slope; the world's tallest climbing wall; and challenging hiking trails up the building where we will find the best views of Copenhagen!
Next, we will head to a local public park that was designed with the diversity of its neighborhood and all the fun that everyone can have together in mind.
We will then find Jens Olsen's World Clock - an astronomical clock located in Copenhagen City Hall. The clock has 12 movements which together have over 14,000 parts. It must be wound once a week. The dials display time, lunar and solar eclipses, positions of the stellar bodies, and a perpetual calendar. The fastest gear completes a revolution every ten seconds and the slowest every 25,753 years.
At this point, we are sure to be ready for some refreshment. We can take a tour of the Carlsburg Brewery.
Tivoli Gardens and Bakken and BonBon Land
Now that we are good and refreshed, its time for some more fun. Let's take it up a notch and visit some world famous amusement parks!
First up is Tivoli Gardens, which was the inspiration for DisneyLand. Walt Disney visited the park and loved it so much, he wanted to create one just like it back at home.
Then, we will head over to Bakken, the oldest amusement park in the world.
If we are fortunate to be there in the Summertime, we might even catch the annual Santa Claus Congress wherein more than 150 Santas gather at the Bakken amusement park!
And, for a theme park that's a little more... offbeat and unique, we will travel just a bit out of Copenhagen for a visit to this unusual theme park - BonBonLand.
Also just outside of Copenhagen, we will visit Roskilde and the Viking Ship Museum, where we can set sail ourselves for a full adventure.
If we are lucky to be there at the right time of year, we can also check out the Roskilde Music Festival.
We will be ready for some downtime again, and what a better way to spend it then to rent a GoBoat and visit a parkipelago in the Copenhagen Harbor.
It will be a while until we get to our virtual tour of Sweden, but we can get a quick peek today, as we travel across the Øresund Bridge - constructed in the 1990s - which connects Copenhagen and Malmö and is heavily featured in the hit TV series 'The Bridge' (stay tuned for my review on that, later this week!)
AARHUS
As we move on from Copenhagen to the mainland of Denmark, we are reminded that one of Denmark's most beloved contributions to the world is LEGO, so we will begin by visiting the LEGO House.
We won't want to skip a visit to the original LEGOLand!
One of the best surfing and watersports spots in the world is called, "Cold Hawaii" - definitely worth our visit!
The Moesgaard Museum is home to a very unique discovery - the body of a man, discovered in a bog in 1952 where he was preserved, and dating back to the 3rd century.
One of the largest art museums in North Europe, the Aros Art Museum, has an extra special draw - the panoramic rainbow walkway - we will definitely want to check this out.
We will dig into our sense of adventure for a unique experience 'bridgewalking' the Little Belt Bridge.
For a more grounded adventure, we will experience the beautiful shifting dunes of the Råbjerg Mile.
It took one man more than 25 years to build this incredible, walkable world map.
